My CPA Journey

The Nature Of Work

I think it's important to think about the nature of work. I've defined work as undertaking a series of tasks that you most likely will not care about, with a group of people you would likely never speak to otherwise, in exchange for money. That money is to likely to be spent on the life you can lead with it as opposed to the life that you want. You are also expected to be grateful for the opportunity.

If this seems terrible it's because it usually is.

Most people simply do not have optionality when it comes to work or, more directly, making money.

The idea of optionality is one of the driving forces behind my pursuit of a career change into the accounting field.

Now - the above is not to suggest any naivety about the path to optionality being paved in sunshine, rainbows and unicorn shit. In fact, I'm pretty sure the reason most people don't have it is that it's difficult to manufacture on your own. But I figure that a good start is getting into a field that has a governing body that can confer a certain level of authority.

And this is why I believe the CPA to be an attractive proposition. Once you clear certain hurdles, you can decide in which direction you want to head. In my case self employment is the long term objective.

For the moment pursuing the degree is the logical next step.
